This is one of the finest examples of a winged angel head from the 18th century. Representing the soul as it assends to heaven, this type of effigy was very prominent on the gravestones of the 1750's - the 1800's. It replaced the winged skull from the 1650's. This particular image is from the grave of Joshua Lawrence of Concord, Massachussets.
